ROBERTO CAVALLI: Goodbye to the Florentine King of the Animalier

The international fashion community says goodbye to the Florentine designer Roberto Cavalli. The “king of animalier”, so called by the New York Times, at 83 years old leaves his wife Eva Düringer and six children after a long illness.

Supporter of maximalism even during more “minimalistic” periods led by designers such as Calvin Klein and Rei Kawakubo, Roberto Cavalli has the merit of making the woman feline, by underling her sensuality through animalier prints inspired by the animal and wild world. (Caiazzo Federica, “Addio a Roberto Cavalli, lo stilista fiorentino «re dell’animalier» è morto a 83 anni”, Vanity Fair, 12 aprile 2024).

Approaching the world of art as a child thanks to the influence of his grandfather and Macchiaioli painter Giuseppe Rossi, Cavalli continued his studies at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence. Afterwards, he dedicated himself to the development of new technologies that could be useful for the production of his iconic dresses and during the 1970s he experimented with a specific printing technic on leather thanks to which he caught the attention of important international fashion maisons, like Hermès and Pierre Cardin. In the same period, Cavalli presented his very first collection in Paris, however it was not until the 2000s that his first boutique in Milan opened.

In 1998 Cavalli launched the fashion line Just Cavalli targeting young people and including men’s and women’s fashion, accessories, perfumes, underwear and beachwear.

Finally, not to forget the approach to the world of denim, characterized by a worn but luxury style, which together with the iconic prints has captured the heart of many celebrities like Heidi Klum and Lenny Kravitz.

Today, the maison is directed by Fausto Puglisi, the designer from Milan who since 2020 carries on the legacy of the “king of animalier”, Roberto Cavalli.
